I like your work very much, but I think your pairings (combinings) are stronger when the connections aren’t quite so literal as in this one.

    Thanks Michael.
I’ve been itching to try something more formalist, and this has been lying around for a couple of weeks. The kicker for me was being able to oppose a nationalist symbol (Catalan flag) with a flag with a deadfish in it!

    Julian,

My comment was kind of a “hit and run” critique and I think I owe more to a blog which gives me daily pleasure.

If the five photos of this montage were five black squares, you’d have a black object on a white canvas that demands consideration of the aesthetic judgment behind its shape and placement. Since they’re photos, not black squares, and since the connections between them are easily understood, their collective shape is exposed as being almost accidental, rather than the product of aesthetic choice. And, for me, there’s a slight disappointment in that.

    The flags are nice.

    Regards,

“their collective shape is exposed as being almost accidental”

Sorry, I should have said, “exposed as being pre-determined and therefore almost accidental.”

Hmm, interesting comment. The layout was actually very carefully coinsidered. I wanted a ‘Y’ shape so that I can link in to other future panels, left and right.. Of course the white space won’t exist so it should work better. I’ve got two other panels which will lock into place slightly higher and right and left. I’d be interested in what you think when I have everything worked out
